Narrow Aisle Racking

Up to 50% more pallets on the floor you already have, with every pallet still directly reachable.

Narrow aisle Pallet Racking is ideal for businesses that need maximum storage capacity while retaining direct access to every pallet. It offers the best balance between storage density, stock selectivity and operational efficiency.

Narrow aisle Pallet Racking is a high-density warehouse storage system designed to maximise vertical space by significantly reducing the width of the aisles between rack rows. By cutting standard aisle widths roughly in half, this system can increase warehouse storage capacity by up to 50% while still maintaining 100% direct access (selectivity) to every single pallet.

How It Works

Traditional racking systems require wide aisles (typically 3 to 4 metres) so standard forklift trucks have enough room to turn around and face the rack. Narrow aisle setups reduce this operating space by utilising specialised machinery that moves down the aisle in a straight line. Instead of the truck turning, the forklift's mast or forks rotate left and right to load and unload pallets.

Because standard forklifts cannot turn or fit in these spaces, narrow aisle configurations require specialised warehouse machinery:

  • VNA or Turret Trucks: Forklifts with rotating trilateral or bilateral heads that can handle pallets on either side of the aisle without turning the vehicle itself.
  • Articulated Forklifts: Trucks designed to bend in the middle to navigate tight storage lines.
  • Guidance Systems: To prevent accidental collisions with the steel structures, trucks are usually locked into the aisle using floor-embedded wire guidance (inductive) or physical steel guide rails bolted to the floor on either side.

Projects involving narrow aisle racking involve a lot more preparation time and consultancy between the racking company the client and the forklift or machine provider. A lot of the projects depending on aisle width may need a stronger racking system as the chances for collision between machine and racking may increase.

At Rack King we can take you through the whole process from initial meeting to handover.

The alternatives

If the truck fleet rules narrow aisle out, adjustable pallet racking keeps full selectivity at standard aisle widths. For bulk stock of one product, drive-in racking is denser again, at the cost of reaching any pallet you like.
