Drive-in Pallet Racking

Forklifts drive into the lanes and set pallets on continuous rails, so around eighty percent of that floor area ends up holding stock.

Drive-in pallet racking is the most cost-effective way to maximise pallet storage capacity by reducing aisle space, making it ideal for bulk storage of high-volume products where pallet capacity is the priority. Basically if you have a large volume of the same pallets which can be bulk stored drive in racking may be the option for you.

Drive-in racking removes most of the access aisles found in standard APR (Adjustable Pallet Racking), allowing forklifts to drive directly into the rack lanes. This can significantly increase storage density and make much better use of warehouse floor space. If you choose to build a drive in rack system ten metres x ten metres you will be maximising around eighty percent of that floor area with storage along with however many pallets high you choose to go.

Where Drive in Pallet Racking is the right choice

  • Large quantities of the same palletised product
  • LIFO [last in first out] stock rotation is acceptable
  • Need maximum pallet density
  • Cold storage facilities
  • Buffer stock or bulk storage areas [stock held for future proofing or bulk cost buying]

It is worth noting though that drive in racking has limitations. These are based around access to pallets that are required for quick turnaround, not being a pallet racking system that is easily relocated to another part of the warehouse as each system is generally built for the area it is initially located. Forklift access is limited to certain less bulky machines which can be an added cost and needs to be factored in to all projects.

When you shouldn't use drive in Pallet Racking

  • Many different palletised products
  • Fast order picking operations
  • Situations requiring direct access to every pallet
  • Strict FIFO [first in first out] stock rotation requirements
